Who Is Joanne Haynes?

Joanne Haynes is an award-winning writer, educator, youth motivator and rapso performer.

Her first novel, WALKING (MCMILLAN 2007) is now a main text on the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s Literature curriculum. She has also won the Derek Walcott/TTW Children’s Literature Prize (2005) and was a finalist in the Commonwealth Short Story Finalist (2001). Her publications appear in the Maco Mere Journal of the Caribbean Women Writers and Scholars, the Commonwealth Audio compilation and the Trinidad Express and Guardian newspapers.

A former teacher of 15 years at Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels, she has always focused on creativity and youth motivation by employing such techniques as using rapso as a teaching and motivational tool, initiating self-esteem building and environmental pride programmes in schools where she taught and encouraging her students to partake in researching their history and environment through orality.

As a rapso artist, she has coordinated shows, done performances and workshops in schools throughout Trinidad and on national platforms and performed at international Caribbean conferences.

Pepperpot Productions combines her teaching experience, creativity, youth focus and deep love for country into an innovative approach to reaching our nation’s youths and building patriotism.

She remains committed to finding more dynamic, innovative ways of educating, outside the classroom.
